A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. If you compare natural teeth to implant supported replacement teeth, you'll see they have the same basic parts. Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that most people will develop during their mid to late teenage years or early twenties. Since this time is traditionally associated with the onset of maturity and becoming wiser, we refer to third molars as wisdom teeth.
Some people may have wisdom teeth that erupt into proper alignment behind the second molars. However, in many cases, the mouth is too crowded for the third molars to develop normally. When inadequate space prevents the teeth from erupting, they are called impacted and will most often require removal.
