Meet Dr. Royal
If you have an appointment with me, you would probably like to know a little about my background. I have been fortunate to have chosen a profession that gives me the opportunity to do something that is professionally rewarding while helping people through what otherwise might be a stressful situation. I really enjoy the satisfaction I get when patients tell me that their experience was much easier than what they expected.
I have been trained in all aspects of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, including the removal of impacted teeth, the treatment of other complex dental conditions, and the administration of IV anesthesia. My training also includes the surgical treatment of dentofacial deformities, traumatic injuries and benign and malignant pathological conditions. For over 35 years at Oakland Oral Surgery, I have seen my field evolve into a technologically advanced discipline, with the use of digital x-rays, 3-D imaging and intraoral scanning/photography. Seeing dental implantology become a part of my everyday practice has been particularly rewarding to me.
I am originally from Birmingham, Alabama, but I have been a Metro Detroit resident since 1978. I received my undergraduate education at Tulane University and my dental degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. After serving as a general dentist in the United States Army for 3 years, I moved to Detroit and completed a rigorous 4 year residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Sinai Hospital of Detroit. I then went into private practice and became a founding partner of Oakland Oral Surgery.
I was certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1984 and am currently a Diplomate of this organization as well as a Fellow in the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. My leadership skills enabled me to serve as President of the Detroit Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and as President of the Western Component of the Detroit District Dental Society. I have also spent time as a clinical instructor in the Oral Surgery Clinic at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.
During dental school, I was recognized for my academic and clinical excellence by being awarded the Dean’s Medal as the top overall dental student in my class. I also received the Lazansky Oral Surgery Award and the Oral Pathology Award for excellence in these two academic areas and was inducted into the National Dental Honor Society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon.
I enjoy music, and I am an avid skier and tennis player. I believe that exercise and staying fit are crucial to a healthy, happy and energetic lifestyle. I have been blessed with a happy marriage to my wife Verne since 1972. I am proud that my daughter Jamie is an orthodontist, practicing in New York and raising our 3 grandchildren, with her husband Chris.
I look forward to meeting you in our office and hope to exceed your expectations.
